The Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) helps low-income, unemployed individuals find work by providing subsidized job assignments and job training for persons 55 and older whose income is at or below 125% of the federal poverty level. As reported by the charity, SCSEP operates in 21 states and Puerto Rico and served more than 13,000 people with more than 3,600 obtaining unsubsidized employment in program year 2018/19.
AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is a free, volunteer-run tax preparation and assistance service, available to low- and moderate-income taxpayers with special attention to those aged 50 and older. In 2019, over 35,000 AARP Foundation trained and IRS-certified volunteers helped over 2.5 million people file their taxes, resulting in over $1.4 billion in income tax refunds for taxpayers and more than $200 million in earned income tax credits.
AARP Foundation Experience Corps is an evidence-based, volunteer tutoring and mentoring program that addresses a major contributor to poverty ? the inability of children in kindergarten through third grade to read at grade level. Experience Corps has more than 2,000 highly-trained volunteers working in more than 22 cities and serves over 30,000 students every year in high-need elementary schools. AARP Foundation also advocates in courts nationwide for the rights of people 50 and older, challenging discrimination and helping to protect older adults from injustice. These efforts - age and housing discrimination, fraud, benefits, employee benefits, health and long-term care - help ensure people 50 and older have a voice in the laws and policies that affect their daily lives. The organization reports that its Impact Areas program invests in innovative solutions and technology to address the vast and multifaceted challenges that many low income older adults face. Impact Areas focuses on addressing the social determinants of health for older adults in four interrelated priorities: food, housing, income, and social connectedness.
