Stated Purpose
"to provide holistic development of villages through empowerment of tribal (vanvasi) and rural communities in India with basic education, digital literacy, skill development, health awareness, and modern and productive agricultural practices and rural entrepreneurship."
Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation of USA (EVF USA) operates single teacher schools in rural villages so children can get primary education. The organization hires local youths and trains them to be teachers to children between the ages of 6-14. The teachers are mostly young women who are trained to become change agents in their villages. EVF USA reports that the children spend about three years in its schools and then are able to seek admission to a middle or high school. The organization aims to reduce the digital divide by operating a mobile computer van called Ekal on Wheels which travels to villages, enabling villagers to get basic exposure to computers. The organization provides training for tailoring, digital literacy and farming techniques in order for people to increase their income. EVF USA also works on promoting healthy lifestyles including improved nutrition, toilet construction, medical camps and telemedicine. In 2019, the organization reported working in 14,088 schools and educating 459,999 students.
