KABOOM! meets the 20 Standards for Charity Accountability.
Stated Purpose:
"to end Playspace Inequity for good."
Year, State Incorporated:
1996, DC
KABOOM! unites with communities and partners to build playspaces in places where access has been historically denied. Together, the organization and its partners work to ensure every playspace reflects the unique needs, desires, cultures, and strengths of the community. According to KABOOM!, playspace inequity is defined as a lack of access to, and a sense of belonging in, quality playspaces due to the effects of systemic racism in communities across the country. The organizations aims to unite with communities to build kid-designed playspaces that can spark joy and foster a sense of belonging for the kids who are often denied opportunities to thrive. KABOOM's principal program, the Community-Build Playspace program, strives to build playspaces and stronger communities. Projects are kicked off with Design Days, which allow local kids and community members to share their ideas for how they would like to play at their dream playground and work with their community engagement team to design it. Projects culminate in the volunteer-led installation of a new playground and recreational space, that will promote active play, physical activity, and community cohesion. Additional programs include the Play Everywhere Program, Disaster Recovery Program, Playspace Inequity Mapping program, and policy and advocacy work.
